The name of the village has been derived from Raja Gulab Singh of Kashmir, who stayed here while he was invading China.

A scenic spot, Gulaba is covered in snow from November to February. When Rohtang Pass is closed for winter season, most of the tourists visit Gulaba for the winter sports such as the skiing and others. The people, who don’t want to ski, can climb up on steep slopes as it is less crowded and peaceful and just slide down and make a game of it. The main claim of the fame for the Indian visitors is the trivial bit that some scenes of the Ranbir Kapoor’s movie Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani were shot in Gulaba village.
