Manali National Park

Manali, known for its scenic splendor and picturesque river banks, is a beautiful tourist spot for people who have a thing for adventure sports and trekking. However, little do people know that there are other things to look out for here as well. A gorgeous wildlife sanctuary situated merely 2 km away from the town, spread over an expanse of 3180 hectares, it is one of those places that you cannot afford to miss visiting while you are in Manali.

There are a host of wildlife animals and birds that one can be lucky enough to spot here. There are mountain lions, Himalayan Black bear, musk deers, flying fox, Indian Hare, Palm Civet, Goral as well as brown bears. There is also the stripped Hyena and the Kashmir flying squirrels that one can witness here.

You wouldn’t want to put your camera to rest, when you see the gorgeous animals in their natural habitat, in full glory. However you need to check and make sure whether you are allowed to click pictures of the animals or not.

Besides animals, there are also exotic wild birds you can see here. Kokla, Monal, Tree creepers Kingfishers and snow pigeons are seen here. Bird watching is an activity that is most soothing and pleasant. If you visit this place in the right weather, that is somewhere in autumn, you will be able to see maximum birds.

Besides the wildlife, the flora of this location is also worth viewing. The lush forest area is covered with fir, maple, chestnut, spruce, deodar and willow trees. These trees are home to the birds and shelter them from the harsh and extreme weather conditions of Manali.

You can easily follow guided tour through the sanctuary, or choose to explore things on your own. In each case, you may be accompanied with either guides or other travellers like yourself. It is best to follow safety measures and follow the given set of instructions, so that the animals and birds can be seen at a safe distance, without making them too shy or conscious, scaring them away.

There is provision for camping in the sanctuary, and you can literally enjoy a typical night in the jungle. It’s advisable to get prior permissions and bookings done, so that when you visit the place, it can be a memorable experience, without any glitches or difficulty.

If you are interested in a tougher routine, there are a number of trekking routes within the sanctuary. You can choose from the tough to easy ones according to your endurance levels.

This can be a one day trip or if you like to stay a little longer, you might opt to camp within the sanctuary, to get the best morning view of the animals. It is essential that proper clothes that protect you from the chilly winter or the conditions in the jungle.
